You can change your default search engine in Edge and other browsers on Windows 11.

Over 93% of web searches in the United States are done with Google, but Windows 11 is set by default to Microsoft’s Bing search engine. If you prefer the results you get from the Google search engine, it’s pretty easy to make Google search the default. We will show you how.

However, Windows 11 does not allow you to set a system-wide default search engine on all browsers. It’s pretty easy to set for everyone, including Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. And if you prefer to search using Yahoo or DuckDuckGo – even Amazon or eBay if your searches are for the items you buy – you can set one as well.

Microsoft Edge: How to change the default search engine

Edge is the default browser for Windows 11. Here’s how to change the default search engine used by Microsoft’s browser.

1. In Edge, in the “Settings and more” menu in the upper right corner, choose Settings.

2. On the left, choose Confidentiality, research and services.

3. Scroll down and near the bottom in the Services section, choose Address bar and search.

4. From the drop-down menu to the right of “Search engine used in address bar”, choose the search engine you want to use.

5. If you cannot find the search engine you are looking for in the list, choose manage search engines then press the Add in the upper right corner to add the one you want.

Google Chrome: How to change the default search engine

You of course don’t need to use Edge in Windows 11 (if you want to switch to a different browser, we cover that below). Here’s how to change the default search engine in the Google web browser.

1. In Chrome, in the “Customize and control” menu at the top right, choose Settings.

2. On the left, choose Search engine.

3. In the Search engine section, use the drop-down menu to the right of “Search engine used in address bar” to set your default search engine.

4. You can manage the search engines used by Chrome in the section below, in manage search engines.

If you’re in the Firefox browser camp, here’s how to change the default search engine in Windows 11.

1. In Firefox, from the Open Application menu in the upper right corner, choose Settings.

4. If you don’t see the search engine you want to use, scroll to the bottom of the page, tap Find more search engines and search for the service you want to use.

How to set a non-Edge web browser as the default browser

Maybe it’s not just another search engine you want to swap, but another web browser as well. By default, Edge is the browser of choice for Windows 11. In Windows 11, the easiest way to set a different default browser is to install it and be prompted to make it your default browser. But if you skipped doing it then, don’t worry, here’s how.

Note that this will require a few steps.

1. Open Settings, and more on the left tap applications.

2. Now press Default apps, and scroll to the browser you want to set as default, for example Google Chrome.

3. In each setting listed – .html, for example, or .pdf – tap the default file type or link type and select the browser you want to use with that type. You can see dozens of file types, but you can probably get away with setting the top 10 with whatever browser you want. You can also go back and adjust other settings.

DuckDuckGo and three other rival Google search engines on Thursday urged EU lawmakers to take action against the Alphabet unit via new tech rules, saying they have yet to see positive results from an antitrust ruling against Google.

In 2018, the European Commission imposed a record fine of 4.24 billion euros (around $ 5 billion) on Google for unfairly using Android to consolidate the dominance of its search engine and ordered it to ensure a level playing field for its rivals. The search giant then made changes and four months ago it said it would let its competitors compete for free to be the default search engines on Android devices in Europe.

US search engine DuckDuckGo, Germany’s Ecosia and their French counterparts Qwant and Lilo have said lawmakers should use technology rules drafted by EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager called the Digital Markets Act (DMA ) to ensure competition.

“Despite recent changes, we do not believe it will significantly increase market share due to its persistent limitations,” they said in a joint letter to European Parliament lawmakers.

They said that a preferences menu that allows users to choose their default search when setting up an Android device is not available on the Chrome desktop or other operating systems, and that it is only displayed once to users. “The DMA should enshrine in law the requirement for a menu of search engine preferences that would effectively prohibit Google from acquiring search access points by default of operating systems and browsers from gatekeepers,” they declared.

The digital markets law could enter into force in 2023 once it receives the green light from lawmakers in the EU and EU countries.

Last week, a hearing was held before the European Court of General Justice in Luxembourg regarding Google’s appeal regarding the € 4.34 billion fine imposed by the European Commission in 2018 in connection with the use by Google from its leadership position in the mobile systems market since 2011 to remove competitors.

Google: People are not stupid and choose our search engine because it is the best

According to the European Commission, Google has used the Android platform to strengthen its dominance in Internet search. The company has asked mobile phone makers to ship Android devices with Google Search and a Chrome browser preinstalled with the Google Play Store, and has also blocked the use of certain Android variants created by third-party developers.

During the hearing, Google tried to prove the unfounded decision of the European Commission on the fine. “The reason billions of people choose Google as their search engine every day is not because of abuse of dominance. It’s because it’s the best, ”lawyer Meredith Pickford said last Friday.

Pickford noted that the deals with phone makers were more about keeping Google competitive. “Consumers are by no means stupid. If Bing or some other search engine was better than Google, people would turn to it, ”he said, referring to Microsoft’s search engine.

In turn, European Commission lawyer Nicholas Khan called on judges to support the European Commission’s decision to fine the US tech giant. “Google gives itself a laurel wreath before the start of the race,” said Khan, adding that the extent of Google’s use of the practice fully justifies the fine.

Google has stopped supporting its search engine in Internet Explorer browser

Microsoft has long since shifted its focus from the archaic Internet Explorer browser to the much more modern and advanced Edge, especially after the latter moved to the Chromium engine. The next nail in the Internet Explorer’s coffin will be that Google has stopped supporting its search service for this browser.

Remember that the latest version of Internet Explorer was available in 2013 with Windows 8.1. It wasn’t until 2021 that Google decided to end support. Now only basic information will appear in the search. The service does not completely stop working with the browser; but the search user will only have access to the most basic functions.

According to Google programmer Malta Ubl, the company has conducted an internal assessment; and concluded that the old browser is simply not worth the company resources to support it. For overly stubborn retrogrades, there will be a few opportunities to use, but the new features will not be available.

Microsoft itself intends to end browser support entirely on June 15, 2022; when the corresponding software will be removed from all user versions of Windows 10. At the moment, the operating system is bundled with it as a solution for obsolete websites; but with the appearance in Edge of the possibility of automatically browsing sites in IE mode; it is necessary in the old version; it has in fact completely disappeared.

Windows 11 will ship without Internet Explorer by default, only Microsoft Edge will be available. Moreover, even now, using Internet Explorer to surf modern sites is not only impractical, but also quite simply dangerous.
