The Wärtsilä technology group, in cooperation with Silverstream Technologies, will test install Silverstream’s proprietary air lubrication system, the Silverstream® System, on a large container ship owned by AP Moller – Maersk, the largest operator of container ship to the world. The trial will examine possible improvements in the overall efficiency of the vessel, focusing on reducing fuel consumption and associated emission levels.

The program will place particular emphasis on the potential application of the system for Maersk ships fueled with methanol. The ultimate goal of the three companies is to support efforts to decarbonise shipping operations. The order was placed by Maersk in May 2021.

Silverstream’s air lubrication system creates a carpet of microbubbles that cover the entire flat bottom of the container. This mat effectively reduces the friction resistance between the hull and the water. The technology works in all maritime conditions, is weather independent and does not limit or negatively impact the normal operational profile of the vessel.

“We are delighted that AP Moller – Maersk is supporting our market leading technology, which has been proven to significantly improve operational efficiency and reduce associated greenhouse gas emissions. We would also like to thank Wärtsilä for their collaboration in delivering this integrated solution, ”says Noah Silberschmidt, Founder and CEO of Silverstream Technologies.

“Everything we do today inevitably defines the future for generations to come, so we must act in a positive way to ensure that decarbonization of ship propulsion is an effective priority for the industry. This is a vision shared by Maersk, a company with which we have worked closely for many years. Silverstream’s air lubrication system is an important stepping stone on this path, ”said Bernd Bertram, Vice President, Propulsion, Wärtsilä Marine Power.

Wärtsilä / Silverstream equipment will be delivered in the second quarter of 2022.

Wärtsilä is an authorized sales and service partner for the system, which is fully integrated into the company’s propulsion portfolio. For new ships, air lubrication can significantly improve compliance with the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). The system has been proven to reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions by five to ten percent, depending on the type of vessel.
